Cherry Kitchen Cabinets Pros and Cons

There is no denying that cherry wood kitchen cabinets exude in elegance and stunning visual appeal, but aside from possessing exquisite aesthetics, cherry wood is also an archetype of practical functionality.

There are a number of reasons as to why cherry wood makes a sensible choice for kitchen cabinetry. First is durability. Although not as resilient as oak, cherry wood is strong enough for long term use. It is known for having a medium level of strength – heavy, hard and can keep up with the wear and tear of everyday use.

When it comes to cost, cherry wood kitchen cabinets are somewhere in the middle price range. They are not expensive and not that cheap either. Among dark woods, cherry wood is more affordable than ebony and mahogany while compared to maple or oak, they cost more. However they prove to be good investments, returning practical advantages in the long run. It is also widely available in the market and can be purchased from online shops, exclusive wood suppliers and cabinet manufacturers.

Going back to the primary reason as to why homeowners love cherry kitchen cabinets, aesthetic value is one of the positive attributes of this high quality wood. It comes in an elegant rich color and deep undertones that bring a luxurious look to kitchens. This richness also introduces a distinctive warmth to interiors, producing a cozy ambiance and making spaces more inviting. Consequently, this welcoming atmosphere makes guests feel at home.

Its beauty also increases as it ages, this being one of its most unique qualities. Since cherry wood is light sensitive, its rich reddish color darkens with age developing a lustrous patina that deepens with age. This beautiful evolution of color is one of the most sought after qualities of the cherry wood kitchen cabinets. Also, cherry wood kitchen cabinets have a timeless appeal.

It is traditional but it is guaranteed to never go out of style. It is versatile and works well with various design concepts. Cherry wood cabinets can easily match any type of kitchen decor and any design inspiration, whether it may be traditional, country, rustic, contemporary or modern. In addition to that, cherry wood cabinets can also function as focal pieces not only for a kitchen, but for a whole house as well.

There are still a few drawbacks to using cherry wood cabinetry, but still its positive features outweigh the negative ones. Just like any other type of wood, it is prone to termite attacks, however this can be addressed by employing preventive measures like treatments and termite proofing. Also, it is not water resistant. To keep water from seeping through your kitchen cabinetry, make sure to wipe any spills immediately so that it does not produce any stain.

Lastly, although strong and sturdy enough, there is still a tendency for it to be scratched over time. All of these disadvantages can be prevented with proper maintenance, treatments and care to ensure that your cherry wood cabinets are in good shape.

Kitchen Paint Colors with Cherry Cabinets

The natural rich deep color of cherry cabinets make way for a lot of possibilities in terms of design. Thanks to its red undertones, formulating the right color scheme to go with it can go anywhere from enhancing its luxurious look to toning down its richness.

There are several wall paint colors that can be explored to match dark cherry kitchen cabinets – from a crisp white color, to subdued neutrals, mellow pastels and rich shades. The right color will entirely depend on the look you want to achieve and the aesthetic attribute you want to stand out, whether it may be contrast or harmony.

Choosing the right paint color to go with your cherry cabinets can help you produce a kitchen design that is cohesive and stunningly attractive as well. Below we give you some paint color choices to help you decide which one is the best for your cherry cabinets:

Neutrals – Neutral colors are colors which are not reflected in the color wheel. This includes black, white, shades of gray and brown. It is also referred to as earth tones, the reason being they are dominantly found in nature. This sometimes include, greens and golden yellow as well. These colors are popular not only in interior design because they can go well with anything. Mixing and matching is the least of your worries when you go with a neutral color palette for your home.

When paired with cherry cabinets, a neutral colored wall greatly enhances warm undertones, making the space more inviting. It serves a subtle backdrop for the dark reddish color of cherry wood and does not compete with its richness. Also, it makes the wood look cleaner and brighter.

Gray – The color gray, being considered as the new alternative for white, works well with cherry cabinets because it creates a dramatic effect, yet it is still subdued and not overwhelming. It is also the perfect substitute for those who find white or beige too plain and boring because gray lends a quiet strength to spaces. On the other hand, warmer neutral colors like golden yellow, light honey or a mellow butter shade, all add warmth to cherry cabinets. This is perfect if you want to add a bit of color and introduce some cheery ambiance to your kitchen without creating too much drama.

Brown – Shades of brown, such as sand, tan or light mocha are perfect if you want to go with a monochromatic color scheme. These colors complement the inherent color of wood and its natural coziness, making the space more “homey” and inviting. However, when choosing a shade of brown for your paint, do go with a dark shade because this will camouflage your cherry cabinets Cherry cabinets are a true beauty in itself, the last thing that you would want to do is to hide that. Remember that in creating a visually pleasing monochromatic scheme, the shades of the color must be well balanced to create some dimension.

For the neutral colors, avoid black because it is too dark and might clash with the reddish undertones of cherry cabinets. This combination has the tendency to produce a design that is too heavy for the eyes and might feel too cramped.

White – White is considered to be the most versatile color as it goes well with anything. Aside from that, white walls have a timeless look which will surely never go out of style no matter what your decor is. This wall color works effectively well with both light and dark kitchen cabinets, including dark cherry wood.

White walls are perfect for creating a stark contrast between dark cherry cabinets. If your kitchen is small, this will aid in making your space appear bigger, more open and airy. Also it instantly brightens up a space, thus creating a perfect balance with the richness of cherry cabinetry.

The color white comes in different tones which one can explore. Ultra white walls and dark cherry cabinets are workable if you want to combine classic and contemporary. If you do not like the striking look of bright white walls and cherry cabinets, you can always choose another shade. Beige, creams, off whites and those with warm undertones also work exceptionally well with dark cherry cabinetry.

Pastels – Light colors are the ideal choice if you want to add a bit of color to your color palette. It introduces color without committing to the intensity of vivid hues. These pastel colors may either have cool or warm undertones in them. Pastel colors with cool undertones are light blue, light green and cool gray, while those with warm undertones are peach, light yellow. The cool undertones uplift the grains in the cabinets which makes the wood appear brighter.

Aside from pastels, you can always tone down a specific shade of color into a more subdued and muted one. Say green for example, can be mellowed into a sage green color. This provides for more options in decorating your kitchen.

Just like white, pastel colors create an illusion of a much bigger space. When used with dark cherry cabinets, the look is more balanced. The richness of the wood also pops out more. So use these colors if you want to make your cherry cabinetry as the main focal point of your kitchen. In addition to that, light colors also create a livelier mood in the kitchen.

Green – To create a stunning contrast between the walls of your kitchen and dark cherry cabinetry, try to go with its complementary color. Based on the color wheel, complementary colors are those which are found opposite to each other. The complementary color for red is green, and since cherry cabinets have a dominant reddish color, shades of green work well in creating contrast. The result of this combination is a visually interesting design that is full of depth. This also makes the color of the wood look brighter and its grain to pop out more.

Different shades of green can also be explored, depending on the effect you want to achieve for your kitchen. Deep and dark greens like forest green, hunter green and olive green are perfect for enhancing drama in the space, while muted shades like sage green and moss green helps tone down the richness of cherry cabinets. Mellow shades like tea green and celadon green, introduce a hint of color and creates a more subtle effect that allows the beauty of cherry cabinets to stand out.

Some additional tips in selecting the right wall color for cherry cabinets:

– Determine if you want to blend or contrast. This is the first step that you need to do in choosing the right paint color to match your cherry kitchen cabinets. Contrast adds depth and drama to a space, while to blend is to create a harmonious look. Both design principles help create a stunning kitchen design.

– Use the color wheel as your guide to creating stunning color schemes for your cherry cabinets. Knowing a few color basics will help you produce an effective and attractive color palette not only for your kitchen, but for your home. The color wheel is an effective decorative tool which can help you eliminate the guesswork in choosing the right color of paint for your walls. Through this you can explore a complementary scheme – if you want to create contrast, or an analogous scheme – if you want to blend harmoniously.

– You can never go wrong with a monochromatic color scheme. A monochromatic color scheme is all about finding the right balance and using the correct shades for each visual element for your kitchen. Since cherry cabinets are dark, you may choose a lighter shade of brown for your flooring, and a light tan color for the walls.

– Avoid red. Since red is the primary undertone of cherry cabinets, matching it with a red wall may overwhelm the space. Although they belong to the same color group, there is a tendency for cherry cabinets and red walls to compete for attention. Also, avoid colors which are too vivid and bright as they can overpower your cabinetry color. Orange, pink and purple also do not go well with cherry cabinetry.

– Consider all the other elements in your kitchen. The color of your walls is one of the major colors that is prevalent in your kitchen. Make sure to choose a paint color that will unite all the other elements in your design aesthetically. This includes the appliances, flooring material, countertop, hardware, accessories, furnishings, furniture, etc.

In summary:

Complementary Colors (green) = contrast, drama, makes cherry color pop
Neutrals (browns) = blending, enhances warmness
Pastels or Light Colors = tones down the color of cherry wood
White = makes cherry cabinets appear cleaner and brighter

Matching Cherry Kitchen Cabinets and Granite Countertops

No matter which one of these you choose to achieve for your kitchen, the result will still be a stunning design that is attractive and appealing. Below, we give you some examples of granite countertop colors that go well with cherry colored cabinets.

They give off a timeless look and classic flair that will surely last for years.

Light granite colors are the perfect choice for lightening up a kitchen that is already dominated with dark red cherry cabinets. Since cherry wood are a bit rich, some homeowners opt for a light colored countertop to make the space less overwhelming. This color is perfect too, if you want to make small kitchens appear bigger.

Light colored granite also come in different patterns and most work well with the fine graining of cherry wood. Why Your Basement Needs Window Wells (and Well Covers, Too)

Window wells are about the unsexiest part of basement finishing you can imagine. But like taking steps to prevent water infiltration, installing subfloor, and insulating walls, it’s one of those necessary “first step” sub-projects that let you get to the fun things like building that bar or installing a home theater.

Wells: Dig-Outs That Allow You To Have a Basement Window
Basements were not meant to have windows; so consider any fenestration you can get to be a nice plus, a bonus, pure lagniappe.

On one end of the spectrum are day-light basements, which have one or more sides at grade level (meaning, you can walk straight out and be on ground, no steps necessary). The other sides will be banked up against earth. On the day-light side, wells are not needed; you can install windows in the conventional fashion.

At the other end are basements that, except for the upper foot or so, are fully underground. When you install a window in such a basement, you need to dig a well on the exterior. The well is your opening to the outside world so that the window can bring in some measure of air and light. In some cases, these wells must be of specific dimensions in order to allow for exit in case of emergency.

If you don’t support the earth in your dig-out, it will eventually collapse–onto your window. Wells are half-circular or rectangular galvanized steel or polyethylene shields that attach to the side of the house, supporting the earth and blocking debris and moisture from reaching the basement window.

What Are Well Covers?
Keeping these basement windows exposed means that anything that is outside at-grade (water, snow, leaves, dust, etc.) can reach your window. Windows are weather-resistant, but only to a point. Wells and covers act like a “storm door for your basement window,” providing extra protection for this heavily battered area.

Covers are composed of transparent plastic (polycarbonate) and are either flat or bubble-shaped. Most tend to cost well under $100, with many even under $50.

Covers attach to the top of an existing well. As it turns out, energy efficiency experts tell us that well covers do a great job of saving you energy and money. The reason is because most basement windows are severely inadequate when it comes to holding in your precious heat and/or cold. Compounding the problem is the fact that basements tend to have a naturally lower temperature than at-grade or above-grade spaces.

Basement windows tend to get a real beating from water dripping off of roofs and from ground-flow rain, so they deteriorate quickly.

Egress Wells: Building Code Requires Specific Dimensions

If your local building code requires that your basement window provide egress (access to the outside in case of emergency), then window well dimensions will be large. Not only that, but egress window wells may need to have some kind of steps or ladder system for occupants to use for escape.

Horizontal dimensions should be large enough to allow the window (or door) to be fully opened.

Total area of the well should be at least 9 square feet.

Outward from the house, it should project at least 36 inches. Height of the well should be no more than 44 inches.

1. Choose a name based on the appearance of your guinea pig.

One of the most common ways of choosing a guinea pig name is to do so based off their appearance. Look at his appearance and try to come up with a cool name that fits.

Many people name pets based on unique aspects of their appearance. Take a good look at your new pet. Think about its size, its color, and any spots or distinctive markings your guinea pig may have. Brainstorm how you could make a name that fits the way your pet looks.

We mentioned choosing a name because he was shy, but what about a name for a guinea pig that is lazy or really energetic. This is a great chance to get creative.

3. Go with an Ironic Name

Picking a name that doesn’t necessarily fit his appearance or personality is not necessarily a bad thing, especially if you are doing it to be ironic. If you have a guinea pig that is easily spooked, you might consider going with a name that would lead people to believe he is brave.

4. Allow Your Guinea Pig to Choose a Name

Of course, we are not suggesting that you wait for your guinea pig to speak up here. What we are suggesting is that you make a game out of the guinea pig name selection. If you can’t decide between several names, write all the options down on separate pieces of paper and place a little bit of food on top. The paper that he goes to first will be the name he chooses.

b. Choosing a Cute Name

1. Keep it Short

Cute names always work well, and the best ones seem to be short. Keeping the guinea pig name down to two syllables makes it easier to call him. It also makes it easier for him to learn and understand.

2. Pick Your Favorite Human Name

It’s really cute to give your guinea pig a human name, and it’s also a nice way to pay tribute to a friend or family member that you love. If you want a human name for your pet but can’t think of one, try reading a baby-naming book.

3. Go with a Nickname

Human names are fun, but they are even cuter when you abbreviate them. You are essentially killing two birds with one stone here, as you get to have a human name, as well as one that is short and easy to understand.

4. Guinea Pig Names that are Sweet

Guinea pig owners have a habit of naming their pets after desserts or candy. The names tend to be cute and affectionate in nature, so perhaps think about your favorite sweet treat and use that as a name.

5. Choose a Popular Name

There is a reason why common dog names have been around for a long time, and it’s because they are catchy and cute. Think about common pet names and see if there one in particular that fits your guinea pig.

c. Selecting an Inspired Name

1. Use the Name of a Family Member

Pets very quickly become part of the family, so it makes sense that you may want to give him the same name as a deceased relative that you really loved. Using your mother’s maiden name is also a cute way to go.

2. Make Your Guinea Pig Names Like Royalty

Do you treat your guinea pig like a king or a queen? If so, then why not give them a regal name that fits?

3. Choose an Unusual Name

While many people stick with common names, there is something cool about choosing one of the many unusual guinea pig names out there.

4. Choose the Name of a Historical Figure

If you are a bit of a history buff, perhaps there is a specific person that you like or identify with in some way. There are plenty to choose from, and there is sure to be one that is a good fit for your guinea pig.

5. Choose the Name of a Fictional Character

Books and movies are great, and you almost certainly have one that you love. How about choosing a name based on a character in one of your favorite films?

I realize that I have given you a lot to think about with all these guinea pig names, so I have decided to make it a little easier for you to choose the perfect name by putting together a list. You can choose from one of those, or you can think of your own.

Himalayan Guinea Pig: A Complete Care Guide

himalayan guinea pig origin

Himalayan Guinea Pig – The more you know about a pet before you buy it, the better job you will do of caring for it. What food does it like to eat, and what special care does it need to stay happy and healthy?

In the case of the Himalayan guinea pig, you will end up with a pet that is fun to have around, but also one that needs more care than most. This is why we have put together a comprehensive care guide that will ensure you get the very most of out your furry little friend.

Himalayan Guinea Pig Appearance and Health

himalayan guinea pig genetics

There are 10 major breeds of guinea pig in the world, with the Himalayan though to be the Siamese cat of the group. While they are not particularly rare, they are incredibly fun to have around. They are easily recognized by their unique appearance, which we will outline below.

The Himalayan guinea pig is derived from the albino breed, and it comes with dark pigment on its ears, nose, and feet. When they are born, Himalayans are completely white, with those pigments coming as it ages.

The darkness and location of the colors depends on the exposure to heat. The cooler parts of the body will get darker coloring, which is why Himalayan guinea pigs that live in warmer climates tend to be lighter in color. There are times when the coloring of the pig may fade, with age, fear, and illness all factors in that.

The body of the Himalayan guinea pig is tube-shaped, with the head being shot and broad, and featuring a convex nose. It has large, droopy ears, and like other albinos, it had bright red eyes.

For the most part, Himalayans are healthy animals, but they are susceptible to sun damage due to being albino. Like most guinea pig breeds, they can experience common issues, such as diarrhea (from eating too many fruits and veggies), in-grown nails, mites, pneumonia, and vitamin C deficiency.

The Unique Elements of the Himalayan Guinea Pig

himalayan guinea pig names

The biggest difference between the Himalayan guinea pigs and other breeds is that they are albino. They will have the red eyes of an albino, as well as pigmentation on the ears, nose, and feet. That pigmentation starts to develop as the pigs age, with all Himalayans born completely white in color.

Himalayan Guinea Pig Behavior and Temperament

himalayan guinea pig personality

The Himalayan guinea pig tends to be cute and cuddly, and is an animal that enjoys being handled and petted. It is this level of comfort with being handled that makes them a better pet for children than other breeds.

These are very social animals, and that is why they have become a common pet choice. They are very active in the daytime hours, and will make all kinds of funny little noises as they play and explore.

Himalayan guinea pig’s require a cage that gives them plenty of room to move around in. They will also enjoy running free in your home, but they need to be supervised, as they will get into areas that can be harmful for them.

Since Himalayans are social herd animals, it is probably best that they are kept in pairs. Even the most attentive owner will be unable to give them all the attention and companionship they, need, which is why a partner is a good idea. Guinea pigs that are paired with others tend to be happier, healthier and more confident and active.

Himalayan Guinea Pig Life Span

These great little animals require a great deal of attention. It is important that they are always kept indoors, and owners with previous Himalayan experience tend to better understand their needs. With proper care, they can live as long as 10 years, but the average is more likely to be 5-7 years.

Himalayan Guinea Pig Care

himalayan guinea pig size

A little spot tucked away in a hidden corner of your home is an ideal spot for a guinea pig cage. Light is not their friend, so make it a darker, cozy spot if you want them to be happy. Leaving them in a place with a lot of light will lead to their colors starting to fade over time.

If you love the colors that they display, pay attention to the climate, as these little guys will see those colors darken in colder conditions. Their points will give you an idea of their general health, as well as to whether they are perhaps sick or frightened.

Make sure that the cage you choose has plenty of space inside. Ramps or shelves are not a good idea, as both can trap the feet of a guinea pig. A small box makes for an ideal hiding and sleeping spot, while the open space will allow him to play and exercise as needed.

Cleaning a Himalayan Guinea Pig

himalayan guinea pig temperament

You should bathe your Himalayan guinea pig a minimum of once per month. The hair on this breed is quite short, so not a lot of grooming and brushing is required. Regular cage cleanings will help keep your pet happy and healthy.

Feeding a Himalayan Guinea Pig

male himalayan guinea pig

One of the most commonly asked questions about Himalayans is in regards what they can eat. If you have had another type of guinea pig in the past, you will find that their diets are quite similar.

There are food pellets made specifically for Himalayans, so have those on hand. They can all eat hay, fruit, and vegetables. The pellets are the staple of the diet, while the hay will help with the digestive system of the pig.

While fruits and vegetables are fine, they should be used as snacks or treats only, as too much can lead to diarrhea.

Diet Options

the himalayan guinea pig

The correct diet is one of the most important elements in caring for a guinea pig. You need to make sure that they get all the vitamin C and proteins they need to be healthy. Since guinea pigs cannot create their own vitamin C, it is important that they get it from grass, as well as fresh veggies and fruit.

When fruits and veggies are out of season, consider adding a vitamin C tablet into their water supply. The tablets will dissolve and be easy for the guinea pigs to ingest, and it will help them maintain their vitamin C levels during the winter months. You cannot overdose a guinea pig on these tablets, as they will expel any of the vitamin C they do not need.

Nutrient-filled snacks are always a great idea. These can include things like parsley, carrots, dandelion greens, romaine lettuce, tomato, spinach, and clover. Thigs to avoid are seeds, dried fruits, and nuts, as these are all potential choking hazards.

As mentioned earlier, hay is an essential part of the diet of your guinea pig. Fresh hay is excellent for the digestive system, and also contains traces of vitamin C. It’s worth spending a little extra to get top quality hay.

Orchard or Timothy grass is also good for the digestive system, whilst also ensuring that the teeth of the guinea pig do not grow too long. Fresh water should be placed in the cage on a daily basis.

This is pretty much all you need to know about properly looking after a Himalayan guinea pig. If you follow the guidelines listed in this piece, you will end up with a healthy happy animal that brings you many years of joy and love. They will reward your care with genuine affection.

Himalayan Guinea Pig Breed

what is a himalayan guinea pig

The time may come when you decide that you want to breed your Himalayan guinea pigs. If you decide to go this route, it is important that you are properly prepared, and that you take the time to ensure that each animal goes to a good home. Below are some things that you will need to know about breeding.

Male guinea pigs reach sexual maturity as early as 3 months old. Female guinea pigs get there even sooner, and can be sexually mature at 2 months. Females are fertile throughout the year, but the best chance of them becoming pregnant occur during the spring months.

You can expect females to come into season every 14 days, with the average cycle running 24-48 hours. Both male and female of the species are fertile between 4-10 weeks of age, with a new estrous cycle occurring shortly after birth. Knowing the gender of each animal from the start is crucial to breeding.

You will notice that the female of the species have a flatter appearance with a definite “Y” shape. Males will display a little penis bud that appears to be in the shape of an “I.” It is best to have the male and female housed together until such times as you notice the female begin to fatten up. A firm belly is usually a sure sign that she is pregnant.

Once you have confirmed the pregnancy, the male should be removed from the cage, as there is the possibility that he will kill the little ones when they are born.

Breeding should be done at just the right time for females, with 6-8 months being the perfect age. If you wait till later than then, you run the risk of her having her pelvic bones fuse together, which could prove to be fatal when she is giving birth.

The average gestation period of a guinea pig comes in at around 68-72 days, which is quite long for a small mammal. Litter size can be anywhere from 1-8 pups, but you can usually expect 2-4 pups in a given litter. Females can produce as many as 5 litters per year.

When it is time for the female to give birth, she will often be crowded by males who are looking to become dominant and protect her and breed with her. If there was not a dominant male, all of the guinea pigs would try to breed with her, which can lead to craziness since the postpartum estrus cycle lasts little more than half a day.

Figuring out the gender of the babies at birth can be tough, but a good breeder can usually have it all figured out after a few weeks. When the guinea pigs reach 4 weeks of age, the males should be weaned and removed to a spate hutch so that they cannot impregnate the sow.

You have the option of leaving the females with the sow or putting them into their own hutches. All of them will be ready for their own space when they reach 6 weeks old.

Tackling Pneumonia in Himalayan Guinea Pigs

black himalayan guinea pig

If you have plans on bringing home a Himalayan guinea pig, you should first talk to a breeder or a vet about the best way to care for these wonderful creatures. This includes gathering information about common ailments that they may be faced with.

One of the more common issues that this breed suffers from in pneumonia, so you need to be able to recognize the signs. This infection arrives quickly and can be deadly if not dealt with as soon as possible.

Signs that your guinea pig may be suffering from pneumonia include lack of appetite, the appearance of being stressed or depressed, frequent sneezing, and an elevated body temperature. If you notice any of these symptoms with your guinea pig, get him to a vet as quickly as possible.

The Himalayan guinea pig may be small, but he is big on love and affection. This explains why the breed is so popular with everyone from first-time pet owners to experienced guinea pig breeders.

They have a friendly disposition, love being handled, and are generally just fun to be around. They will love spending as much time with you as possible, which makes them a perfect pet.

The Different Breeds of Long Haired Guinea Pig

long haired guinea pig

Long Haired Guinea Pig – Guinea pigs, which are part of the rodent family, have become beloved pets in many western households. These cute animals ae often referred to as cavy’s, which comes from their Latin name Cavia Porcellus, but it should be noted that they are not from Guinea, and that they are certainly not pigs.

The long haired guinea pig breed is one that requires a lot of care, especially when it comes to their coat. If you live in an area where high temperatures are common, you will need to regularly trim the hair of your pet to prevent him from getting heat stroke or circulatory problems. The hair should be kept neat and tidy at all times, especially on the bottom, where bacteria may build up.

Interbreeding is big business in the guinea pig world, and that has helped create several different long haired breeds.

Long Haired Guinea Pig Breeds

Peruvian Guinea Pig

peruvian guinea pig

The Peruvian guinea pig has the longest hair of all breeds, and this one actually holds the word record for the longest hair. It is not uncommon for their hair to grow to as long as 20 inches (50 cm), the reason for which may be that their hair grows straight instead of curly like other breeds.

This breed of long haired guinea pig has a natural parting down the back, and also has hair that will grow forward to cover their face.

As you might expect, the Peruvian guinea pig takes some work to look after, as the long hair can become knotted if not regularly combed. This can make life uncomfortable for him, which is why some owners choose to trim the hair on a regular basis. While this makes caring for him a little easier, the lack of hair does take away some of his charm.

As far as behavior goes, the Peruvian tends to be a little more inquisitive than other guinea pig breeds. The will take time to explore every inch of their environment, and since they are very aware, you can also expect a bigger reaction when you decide to spend some time with them.

Abyssinian Guinea Pig

long haired guinea pig

The Abyssinian guinea pig is one of the oldest species out there, and their appearance is one that people love. They have swirls in their long hair, and that makes them popular on the show circuit. If you want to show your Abyssinian guinea pig, look for it to have 8-10 rosettes (swirls), as that is sure to impress the judges.

The hair on the Abyssinian is not as long as that of the Peruvian, but it is still considered to be a long-haired guinea pig. Those swirls are a major draw for guinea pig lovers, and it is the people who show these animals who tend to be drawn to this breed.

The swirls, or rosettes, on the Abyssinian are similar to the crowns that humans have on their hair. The difference here is that while human hair has only one or two crowns, the number of swirls on this guinea pig can be as many as 8 to 10. These clashing rosettes cause little tufts, and as they usually come in pairs, you end up with a nice little pattern on the body.

Rosettes comes in several different colors, and it is not uncommon to see as many as 5 different shades on a single guinea pig. While these animals are cute to look at, they are not for the average pet owner. The hair requires a lot of attention in the form of regular combing, grooming, and washing.

As well as the hair, it is the character of the Abyssinian that makes it such a popular long haired guinea pig breed. They are playful, mischievous, and love to make a mess, but they are also very loving. As great as all that is, the need for regular upkeep makes them a poor choice as a pet for a child.

Silkie / Sheltie Guinea Pig

how much does a long haired guinea pig cost

Another long haired guinea pig breed is he silkie, which is also referred to as a sheltie. This is another breed that has straight hair, bur one of the biggest differences with this cavy is that its hair grows back from the head, almost giving it the appearance of a slicked back rocker from the 1950’s.

They do not have the usual middle parting in their hair, as the longer growth at the back gives them something of a pear-shaped appearance.

The hair on the silkie is incredibly soft and smooth, making them fun to handle and play with, but that hair does require a lot of attention. I you fail to brush and groom it regularly, it will become matted and uncomfortable for your pet.

This is another pet that isn’t really a good choice for kids, unless of course you are a parent willing to take on the grooming responsibilities. If you can take care of that side of things, then we guarantee that your kids will love the soft feel of these little guys.

Texel Guinea Pig

long haired guinea pig babies

This long haired guinea pig is quite new to the world, as it wasn’t until 1998 that the breed was recognized by the American Cavy Breeders Association. Despite being late to the party, the texel guinea pig has become one of the more popular breeds, thanks in large part to their unique look.

While the texel has an appearance similar to the silkie, it has tighter hair curls covering its entire body. There are no rosettes to be found on the texel, and its curly hair covers its head, as well as its body.

Guinea pig enthusiasts love the texel, and tend to be particularly fond of the soft curly hair that covers this little guy, even growing along his belly. The unique look of this guinea pig has made it one of the more common breeds entered into shows.

Like all other long haired guinea pig breeds, the texel requires a lot of grooming, as their hair will tangle without it. This makes it a breed best suited to those with a lot of extra time on their hands, or for people interested in entering into the world of guinea pig shows.

Alpaca Guinea Pigs

long haired guinea pig matted hair

The alpaca guinea pig is quite rare, and you can sometimes only find them by going through specialist breeders.
This breed is sometimes referred to as the Merino Peruvian, and as that name suggests, it is akin to the Peruvian breed, albeit with curlier hair that grows forward of the face instead of back and away from it.

Ask the average guinea pig what they believe to be the most beautiful breed out there and you will hear many of them mention the alpaca. This breed needs almost constant attention, although it is not recommended that they be bathed too often, as this can lead to their skin becoming too dry.

As we mentioned earlier, this is a rare breed that you likely will not find in a store, but rather through a guinea pig breeder.

Lunkarya Guinea Pig

long haired guinea pig pics

It was the interbreeding of a rex and a Peruvian guinea pig that created the lunkarya breed. This breeding began in Scandinavia during the 80’s, and it is still in that part of the world where much of the breeding is still performed.

This long haired guinea pig has wavy hair that has that familiar center parting down the back. While the hair looks smooth, it is actually a little rougher than other guinea pig breeds, and it can become rather dense as it grows.

For a while the popularity of this breed waned, but breeding has picked up again, causing the numbers of lunkarya to rise.

There are 3 distinct types of the lunkarya out there, and they are the Lunkarya-Silkie, Linkarya-Peruvian, as well as Lunkarya-Coronet. Each of these breeds has long, rough hair that needs to be cared for just as carefully as the smooth hair that you find on other breeds of long haired guinea pigs.

Coronet guinea Pig

guinea pig long hair

The coronet guinea pig is a cross between the crested and the silkie guinea pigs. Their hair is long, and they have a distinctive swirl on their head.

While the hair of this breed is like the silkie in that it grows back from the head, it is different in that it also has a crest, which is like a symmetrical version of a rosette. This crest is unique in that it tends to be a different color than the hair on the body of the guinea pig. The overall appearance of this crest makes it appear as though the animal is wearing a cute little crown.

Sheba Mini Yak Guinea Pig

grooming a long haired guinea pig

This breed was first created in Australia, and have genes that are derived from the long haired and short haired guinea pigs.

The general appearance of the Sheba mini yak guinea pig is a cross between a Peruvian and an Abyssinian, although their hair is a little shorter than both.

This mix of short and long hairs is sometimes found on smooth-coated guinea pigs, although there is no specific nickname for it.

Perhaps the most distinctive feature of the Sheba mini yak is it whiskers, which look like a mutton chop mustache. The tend to have several rosettes, the look of which makes them appear shaggy.

These animals always look as though they are having a bad day, but it is a look that makes them beloved, and it has to be said that their cheerful demeanor also helps.

English Merino Guinea Pig

long haired guinea pig breeds

This breed is like a coronet guinea pig, albeit a much curlier version. Other differences include wavier hair and a rosette located back between the ears as opposed to on top of the head. This long haired guinea pig has curly hair on it body and shorter hair, complete with a swirl, on its head.

The English merino is a rather rare breed of cavy that come in several different colors. These animals are very fun to have around, but they are another breed that requires a lot of work.

Like most rare breeds, the English Merino usually needs to be bought through a breeder. Their hair requires a lot of maintenance, especially since bedding, hay, and even excrement can become picked up by it. You will also need to make sue to bathe the English merino and trim its nails once per month.

Angora Guinea Pig

guinea pig with long hair

This is a breed of long haired guinea pig that is still found in Europe, but which may be tough to find in other parts of the world. The Angora comes complete with 8 cowlicks located as follows: 4 on the back, 2 at the front, and 2 on the haunch.

Mohair Guinea Pig

long hair guinea pig

The name nor breed of the mohair guinea pig is officially accepted yet. It is a cross breed of the angora and texel, and it has long curly hair complete with cowlicks.

white long haired guinea pig

As you can see, long-haired guinea pigs come in all different shapes, sizes, and colors. This variation means that there is a long-haired breed out there to suite every taste. While there are differences between each breed, the behaviors tend to be the same, with some subtle differences. The Peruvians are nosier than most, while the Abyssinians are all about having fun.

The one caveat with long haired guinea pigs is that while they are fun to own, they also require a lot of maintenance. This means that they may not be the ideal pet for little kids, but they are really excellent pets for those who have time to look after them, and who may be considering a show pet.
